Tartu Post Station: Where the Roads Met
Find the viewpoint and reveal the five-arched post station where horses were changed and journeys toward Riga and Saint Petersburg began.

The story
Look at the horses and the open yard. This was not simply a post office. Before railways and motor traffic, Tartu Post Station was a transport hub where roads, travellers, messages, and fresh horses met.
The location was chosen for a reason. At the top of Riia Hill, the road from the city divided toward Riga and toward Pskov. A post station or roadside inn already operated here under Swedish rule. Travellers could change horses, eat, rest, and, when necessary, stay overnight. A wooden post house was built in 1737, replaced by a new residence in 1786, and by the 1820s that building was already worn out.
